Biomarkers are becoming more commonly used in colon cancer diagnosis and management. Precision medicine is the idea of tailoring treatments to the individual patient by using predictive variables such as biomarkers.
There are different types of biomarkers, and one of the most common used in colon cancer management is the genetic mutations within the tumor. Ideally, physicians would be able to evaluate the genetic profile of a patient’s tumor and using this information, predict how a patient would respond to a certain therapy and therefore recommend appropriate treatment.
