In about ten percent of CLL patients, their disease transforms into a more aggressive lymphoma called Richter’s Transformationand it is much more difficult to treat. Patients who suffer from Richter’s Transformation may experience symptoms like fever, night sweats and weight loss, that indicate a change in their disease. Doctors typically treat these patients with large cell lymphoma therapy, “but it doesn’t work so well,” says Dr Nicole Lamanna, a leukemia specialist at Columbia University Medical School. In certain instances, a stem cell transplant may be required.
