Can I still have a baby after chemotherapy? It’s a natural question for many women to ask. Not all types of chemotherapy will affect your ovaries, says reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Jaime Knopman. Some have very little or almost no effect on the ovaries, but those that do can be highly damaging. Sometimes chemotherapy puts women into early or premature menopause and “takes their ovaries out of the game”.
This doesn’t mean that you can never have children. If you didn’t freeze your eggs or embryos before treatment, you can use an egg donor. “We would help you select someone who you feel (has the) characteristics you would want to represent in your child,” says Dr. Knopman. In this process, the donor’s egg will be combined with your partner’s sperm, and you’ll be able to carry the pregnancy.
