If you’ve been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, see a specialist — that’s the advice of Nicole Cundiff, who lost her mother to the disease. Nicole, a Phoenix native, told SurvivorNet that when her mother was diagnosed with the disease in 2007 — there was a shortage of gynecologic oncologists in the Phoenix-area. It was recommended that her mother see a general oncologist instead.
“If it wasn’t for my former roommate telling me about the statistics and survival between women who are treated by a specialist versus a general oncologist in regards to ovarian cancer, we wouldn’t have started searching for another place to provide treatment,” Nicole said. “Now, there are many gynelogical oncologists in the Phoenix-area. We are no longer in a shortage in this area, which is great. Women are having much better results, better life-spans, better experiences.”
