Getting an ovarian cancer diagnosis can be really overwhelming.
“It’s a tough disease to find out that you have” Compass Oncology Physician’s Assistant Marisa Gholson told SurvivorNet. “You’re kind of launched into learning about treatment, people are talking about chemo and surgery and all sorts of stuff … but, I think that [taking] it one step at a time; there’s many things that we can do to help mitigate those fears and that anxiety.”
Read More Gholson said meeting with a social worker and being honest with your medical team about how you’re feeling can be a really big help. If anxiety about the disease is becoming extreme, doctors can prescribe medications or recommend other methods to keep those feelings in check. Many doctors will recommend meeting with a counselor during the cancer journey. Gholson pointed out that this can really help women to manage anxiety. Support groups — where you are meeting and talking openly with other women who have been through the same thing — can also be an important coping tool during this time.
